Web Standards and how to use them

webpage designer

W3C did a fine job of standardizing and documenting browsers. But they failed to do a good job of maintaining and creating web standards. HTML 4 was created to address the new features in Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4 browser without W3C approval. How can we use web standards to our advantage? Let's look at each one of these issues more. CSS is another important topic.

HTML

In 1998, during a browser war between Microsoft (and Netscape), HTML web standards was created. Both companies "improved" HTML to make it more usable. This included new elements and ways of manipulating web documents. The Web Standards Project was established because browsers that were built from these versions of HTML became incompatible. This is the standard HTML or XML for web documents that all browsers should conform to.

XHTML

XHTML is a standard for web pages that specifies the markup language. Its primary advantage is that XHTML allows for well-formed code. Most public web apps cannot work in an XHTML webpage. However, this doesn't mean that XHTML has no value. Browsers support it. In fact, most major browsers support XHTML.

CSS

CSS3, or CSS3, as it is often called, is a set if web standards for the presentation and display of web content. It is a set of rules and guidelines that browsers can use to display your content in a consistent manner. CSS web standards are always changing, so make sure that your site works with the latest browsers. Here are some CSS3 examples and the benefits it offers. CSS3 is an essential tool for web designers and developers.

ECMAScript

ECMAScript allows you to program the World Wide Web using built-in functions or objects. The ECMA General Assembly approves the language on a yearly basis. Its development is available publicly through Ecma TC39 GitHub, which also hosts proposals as well as official specification text and meeting notes. There are currently seven ECMAScript Editions, including a most recent one.

ECMAScript, an object-based language, is available

ECMAScript uses object-based programming languages for web standards. Its built-in operators provide a wide range of functions and operations. Each language edition has been approved by the ECMA General Assembly, and published as a Standard. ECMAScript is an open-source project. All development can be found on the Ecma TC39 GitHub organisation. These documents include meeting notes as well proposals and official specifications.

ECMAScript is a W3C recommendation

ECMAScript, a scripting language for the World Wide Web, is available. Its syntax is relaxed, and intentionally resembles Java's. It was intended to be an intuitive scripting language. To use ECMAScript, every web browser must provide its own environment. This environment includes objects that represent input and windows. Any of these objects can be used to create scripts.

HTML 4.0

HTML 4.0 replaces the previous HTML web standard. HTML 4.0 is a freely-implementable format and is non-proprietary. HTML 4.0 first appeared in December 1997, as a recommendation of the World Wide Web Consortium. Although HTML 4.0 is still available from the W3C, it has been removed from their site. However, you can still download it in PDF from the Internet Archive.

CSS-1

CSS1 is a set web standards that defines styling for web pages. Style is typically attached to an element according to its position. CSS1 isn't enough to cover common effects such rounded corners and bold text. These needs can be addressed with pseudo-classes or pseudo-elements. These elements and/or classes do not exist in HTML source. They are "inserted” by a user agents (UA) when certain conditions are met. The pseudo-class and pseudo-element are named after fictional tag sequences.

FAQ

What is responsive web design?

Responsive Web Design (RWD), is an approach to designing responsive websites. Content will display correctly on all devices, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, tablets, and desktop computers. This allows users the ability to view a website simultaneously on different devices and still have access to other features like navigation menus, buttons, and so forth. RWD is intended to ensure that any user viewing a site views the exact version on their screen.

A website that sells primarily through eCommerce would be an example of this. You want your customers to be able to purchase products from your store, even if they are viewing it on a phone.

A responsive website will adapt its layout to suit the device it is being viewed on. Your laptop will view the website exactly as a normal desktop site. However, if you're viewing the page on your phone, it will display differently.

This means you can make a website that looks amazing on all types of devices.
